March Word of the Month – Character Wk 2

Character

Week 2

”A ‘No’ uttered from deepest conviction is better and greater than a ‘Yes’ merely uttered to please, or what is worse, to avoid trouble.”

Mahatma Gandhi, 20th century proponent of non-violence and the spiritual leader of India’s independence

Translation for Adults

A large part of your character is the beliefs you hold sacred. Everyone has his or her own values and belief systems. The true test of character is: Do you stand by those beliefs even when they might not be popular? It is not worth sacrificing your  integrity  to  please  others no matter who they are. Staying true to your values, although difficult, is always better than succumbing to what other people may want you to believe.

Translation for Kids

There will be instances throughout your  life  when people you know will ask you  to  do  something  you know is wrong, such as try drugs or alcohol or hurt another person. This will test your  character.  When faced with peer pressure, it is important that you have the Black Belt confidence to say, “NO,” and  stand  by your beliefs. It is far better to keep your beliefs strong and do what you know is right than just to say, “Yes,” to please your friends.

Class Discussion for Kids

  1. When was your character challenged, but you stood by your beliefs?
  2. How did you feel when your character did not waiver?
