October Word of the Month – Risk part 3

Risk

Week 3

“The important thing is this: To be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become.”

Charles DuBois

Translation for Adults

Throughout history, uncounted people have sacrificed everything, including their lives, so the world could be better. Most of us are not faced with those ultimate sacrifices, but it’s not unusual for us to be required to make a large sacrifice to reap even larger rewards. Resisting change is basic human nature because we don’t want to jeopardize what we already possess: career, wealth, possessions, comfort, position.

You may never be required to sacrifice any of these either, but you should always be willing to give every task and goal your best effort. If you decide a goal requires real sacrifice, then give your all.

Translation for Kids

Sacrifice means making the right decision today, so the future will be better. You may want to skip your martial arts class and stay home to play video games with your friends. The right decision is to sacrifice your time with your friends and attend class. When you attend class you are working toward your Black Belt. A Black Belt is a much greater reward than a few hours playing video games. Playing video games is easy and fun. Going to class is fun and hard work. Hard work is the best choice to achieve your goals.

Class Discussion for Kids

  1. What did you sacrifice to work hard toward a goal?
  2. How did your sacrifice help you reach your goal? Did you succeed?
