October Word of the Month – Risk part 2

Risk

Week 2

“You’ll always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

Wayne Gretzky, Hockey superstar

Translation for Adults

Experiencing failure because you never “took a shot” is much worse than “taking a shot” and failing to score. You’ll never score a goal in the first case, but you will in the second, if you keep shooting. The concept of failure is a great teaching tool. Without the knowledge of failure, you would not know how to succeed. More importantly, those that have experienced failure (and often more than once) seem to be those that know how to succeed. It’s not failure you should fear, but what it means when you are unwilling to take risks. If you never try, then you will never score, and you need a score to win.

Translation for Kids

Think about what Mr. Gretsky said. You miss all the shots that you don’t shoot at the goal. You can’t achieve your goals unless you take risks. You must try that new kick to know if you can do it right. If you don’t do it right the first time, then ask your instructor to help you. You can’t be afraid to ask for help. Try the kick again.

Practice it at home. Learning that kick shows that you are a hard worker. It shows that you are willing to take risks. It shows that your hard work leads to your goals. Always be willing to shoot at the goal to score, and succeed.

Class Discussion for Kids

  1. What would you tell a friend who was afraid to try something new?
  2. How would you help him or her try? What would you do if he or she failed the first time?
