Power Week 2

Week 2

“It is a strange desire…to seek powers over others, and to lose power over man’s self.”

Francis Bacon, 15th-century English philosopher, essayist and statesman

Translation for Adults

It’s easy as an adult to use power to control others. You can chain your dog, send your child to his room and tell a subordinate worker to have that report finished by

noon or else. You’re fortunate, however, because martial arts has taught you that having power brings with it responsibility. Power is not a selfish opportunity to con- trol, but a life-affirming opportunity to direct, support and motivate others. Your martial arts training affirms the ancient tradition that learning to control one’s own power is paramount.

Translation for Children

Martial arts has helped you feel more powerful in the way you move and think. Those are powers you should always use in a positive way. You’re learning how to con- trol those powers and yourself. Once you have control, you can use your new powers to help people: use your muscles to help an elderly person carry a bag; use your mind power to create a game for the younger children; and use the power of your spirit to be a really good friend. You’ll feel great about your new powers when you use them to make life better.

Class Discussion for Children

  1. Do you feel your power after doing a form? Do you know you did it right?
  2. Did you ever feel clumsy? Were you ever so mad that you could barely control yourself? How has your training taught you to control your body and mind?
  3. Doesn’t it make you feel better when you know how to control yourself?
