December Word of the Month Week 3

Caring and Sharing

Week 3

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest

compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

Leo Buscaglia, PhD, author, renowned lecturer and University of Southern California professor

Translation for Adults

You’re having “one of those days” and suddenly someone tells you, with great sincerity, how much you helped her recently, compliments you for your sup- port, or simply lets you “vent”—what a transforma- tion! “One of those days” is now one of your best. It

is just more proof that the smallest acts of kindness and caring can have a huge effect on someone’s life. The same is true with children. If you’re a parent, then you’ve probably noticed that when you take the time to listen to your child and give him your undivided attention, and compliment him on his good behavior or a positive outcome, he shines as bright as the sun.

Translation for Kids

There’s many ways you can help a friend feel better. Give him a pat on the back. Give him a deserved compliment. Give him your advice when he is in a tough situation. What you may think is only small help can mean something big to others. Just a few minutes of your time can help a friend feel really great and more confident. You can encourage others just like your martial arts instructor encourages you. You can also help others achieve their goals, whether it’s earning a black belt or an “A” on a spelling test.

Class Discussion for Kids

  1. Can you think of a time where you really needed encouragement from someone else?
  2. Did someone encourage you, and if so who?
