October Word of Month – Risk

Risk

Week 1

“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.”

Robert F. Kennedy, U.S. Attorney General during Kennedy administration

Translation for Adults

Taking risks is challenging, but overcoming those challenges usually leads to big rewards. If you were afraid to fail when taking risks, then you would accomplish nothing in life. Investing in a new business is a costly and risky proposition, but millions do it everyday. They know that trying to succeed is as important as actually succeeding. Part of the reason their investments generate profit is because they are willing to try. Virtually all of the choices in your life involve risk. In some, you invest your time, in others, your money. Whether your choices seem petty or enormously important, always give your best effort to help those choices result in success.

Translation for Kids

Taking a risk means that you’re not afraid to try your best. Taking risks may seem scary, but you’ll learn new lessons and achieve your goals. Don’t be afraid to try that new kick in class. You may not do it right the first time. You must try it again and again to do it right. Your hard work could lead to your Black Belt. A Black Belt is not afraid to take risks. You may make mistakes, but those mistakes will help you learn how to do things right. Learning from your mistakes makes you a leader. Leaders are willing to take risks be successful.

Class Discussion for Kids

  1. What did you try that you were afraid to try because you thought you couldn’t do it right?
  2. Did you try again and again, until you did it right? How did that make you feel?
