October Word of the Month – Risk part 4

Risk

Week 4

“You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.”

Annie Dillard, contemporary American author

Translation for Adults

You can’t analyze and calculate risks too closely or you’ll find yourself confused and filled with indecision. Some risks, and the rewards they bring, require that you are willing to step off a cliff. You should avoid blindly stumbling through life, but some goals are worth you simply “going for it.” You’ve made the decision to work for a new company. It’s a risk, but there could be great rewards. You must risk introducing new ideas during meetings and risk new responsibilities, but, remember, your martial arts training helps to build your confidence, so you know how to take bold risks. That confidence will help you build your wings, so you can easily reach your reward.

Translation for Kids

Think about when you learned how to ride a bike. It probably felt like you were about to jump off a cliff. It was a big risk. You would achieve a big goal if you could ride a bike. Those training wheels made it easy. Your mom or dad was right beside you to stop you from falling. One day you were ready to take the risk, even if you failed.

Your martial arts training taught you to be confident. You learned that you must work hard for big rewards. You took the risk. You learned how to ride a bike. Now, you have fun riding with your friend. Work for all your goals in the same way, and you’ll succeed.

Class Discussion for Kids

  1. What was the biggest risk you ever took? What was your goal?
  2. How did you feel when you reached your goal?
