Power Week 3

Power Week 3

“I hope our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us that the less we use our power the greater it will be.”

Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States

Translation for Adults

Power is fuel; it’s valuable because it drives you and your goals. The power you receive from your martial arts training also drives you on the path towards wisdom—to make good decisions, be committed to yourself and help others. You’ll discover that you don’t need to overpower a situation to resolve it or a challenge to achieve it. Small amounts of power specifically applied will enable you to accomplish much more than you may have thought possible.

Translation for Kids

Think of the power you’ve gain from martial arts as being a fuel, like wood or gasoline. You are like an engine that needs that fuel to grow, learn, play and make the right decisions. It’s amazing how you feel like you have more power when you make more right decisions, when you remain committed to your training and when you help others. Remember, if you’re older or larger than other children in your martial arts class, then you must be careful to control your power when you spar and practice with them. It’s important to learn that you only have to use a small amount of your power, or “fuel,” to think and act right.

Class Discussion for Children

  1. Did you ever use too much of your power? Did you ever jump and play so much that you fell or knocked someone to the ground? Did you ever close your bedroom door so hard that something fell to the floor in your bedroom?
  2. Has martial arts helped you to control yourself better? Do you know how to use just a little bit of your power to help someone?
